Saturn in 2001 - 2002

11 Apr 2002

Saturn; 11 Apr 2002, 20:51 to 20:56BST (19:11 to 19:25UT).

My first attempt at catching Saturn by attaching my digital camera to the telescope. Atmospheric turbulence was poor so I have averaged several shots to make this composite. The rings pass in front of Saturn to the bottom (north) of the picture and to the back at the top (south).

The sun is shining slightly from the left so the the rings are slightly darker to the top right where the shadow of Saturn's globe falls across them. Saturn is a definite yellow colour when observed visually, though running the camera at ISO800 in an attempt to keep exposure times short has resulted in some spurious red and green pixels.

Minolta Dimage 7, 49.1mm, afocal projection using 25mm eyepiece on 8.75inch f/7.3 Newtonian telescope. 1/15s @ f/14, running at ISO800. Scale of 0.3 arc seconds (= approx. 2500km ) per pixel. 10 pictures stacked with Astrostack v0.9 using Mean mode.

16 Apr 2002: Occultation of Saturn by the Moon

I witnessed and recorded both the disappearance and re-appearance of Saturn, click here for full details.

Saturn re-emerges from behind the Moon

Saturn re-emerges on the sunlit side of the Moon 22:25:35 BST (21:25:35UT).

The Moon is 4 days past New so the Sun is shining from the west (left). The occultation lasted 26 minutes, taking place near the southern edge of the Moon.

Atmospheric clarity and stability were poor as the Moon was at only 10 degrees altitude at this time.

Minolta Dimage 7, 49.1mm, afocal projection using 25mm eyepiece on 8.75inch f/7.3 Newtonian telescope. 1/3s @ f/14, ISO800. Scale of 0.7 arc second (= approx. 5,000km (on Saturn) / 1.2km (on Moon)) per pixel.
